Senior Stories Continued
Seniors Story Project
What do I do now?
· You MUST look through all documentation, interview questions etc. Start to brainstorm ways that you will show this information in a video format. Example: You may do it documentary style with video clips, pictures and voice overs. (audio coverage)
· You can talk about the process: You can be interviewed by members of your team and talk about the fact that is was difficult at first, you felt nervous, you didn’t know them and later felt pretty good about who they were and what they had to say. Include clips you may have filmed, audio and pics. Perhaps mention that you intend to go back and visit.
· You may choose to illustrate the story. We have bamboo tablets and you can draw into video clips etc. You may want to have voice overs to explain what is happening visually.
· You may want to create a sand art illustration. If the story is fast paced and moving it may be perfect to draw and erase into the picture with sand.
· You may want to create a photo slide show with subtitles talking about the time and place. You can insert audio (original music)
· Another option may be to do a comparison. You may be on film mentioning Vanderhoof now and your senior partner can be on film reminiscing about Vanderhoof days ago.
· You may create a music/documentary if your senior is a musician, include slideshow of him playing previously and the new shots of him (solo) and as a duet. This may be nice with an interview clip of the students talking about how cool, or what a great musician he was and is.
What will my Seniors Story project look like when complete?
· The complete video will have images of some sort, audio and video segments describing the process, the story you were told or the comparison of old and new.
· It will have some type of text and a clip of your experience attached at the end (interview each other)
· The film will be mastered and all editing PERFECTED! All original music/audio and special thanks to the Seniors (by name), Riverside place, CNC, NVSS. It will be saved as a movie file and given to Mrs.Pye on a memory stick.
Everyone in the group DOES have something to do!
· Find royalty free music
· Create a DVD cover
· Write a brief write-up of the experience
· Help with the making of the Film.

Senior Stories
We have gone over interviewing skills and some of the students have reported that
they have the story and have had some great visiting time.
I have a tough group of kids and wasn't sure how they would perform. For the most part I have been impressed.
The students have some really great ideas and relationships merging.
David and Taylor: BOB HOLMES
Riverside Place
Royce and Colten: MARY BRANDES Riverside Place
Riverside Place
Their focus is on music, how has it changed? He played at small and large town dances, how have they changed? He will (hopefully) play some music for them and either be captured on film or photos used and audio captured or voice over.
Royce and Colten: MARY BRANDES Riverside Place
This group has not been attending but the focus seems to be on the train and the time spent with so many people and their things for a whole week without being able to leave the train. Also, working at the hospital and bakery. This group has been talked to and we are hoping for a strong come back for them.
Jill, Miranda and Jordan: HILDA VILLUMSEN Riverside Place
She has told them many stories and they have documented her immigration story and the stories about the boat and Vanderhoof: what it used to look like. They have developed some great conversations and the idea is to use both photograph and voice overs. Miranda’s mom has images of Vanderhoof from 1950 and they will use them.
Kirsten and Kayla: JOHN CAMPBELL Riverside Place
He has talked quite frequently about the draft horses and how he was a judge at the fall fairs. This group feels confident that they have some questions and will be working on ideas and filming tomorrow.
Lacey and Courtney: DORIS PORTERFIELD Riverside Place
This group has a pretty clear idea about the story that Doris has been telling. They will photograph the space where the ferry used to be and collect images and stories to portray the events. Her story also includes her farm being washed away. These girls are organized and have great ideas. They are enjoying their visits.
Delta: KAY GOE Riverside Place
Delta will be working with an aid tomorrow and she will receive help documenting and asking questions. Kay has shared interesting information regarding the story of moving from Saskatchewan to Vanderhoof. WE discussed as a class (with Charlyne) what the differences may be and came up with some interesting points.
Kyle, Eric and Brandon: BERT IRVINE Riverside Place
This group is exceptionally excited. They keep mentioning how they want to continue visiting even after the project. They have planned a trap line visit and are going to create a documentary style video. Bert had arranged a trap line visit with some students--I contacted one of their guardians and she knows Bert and will organize something so that she will be present for the safety of both Bert and the kids. She will plan for this weekend or next (not during school hours). This group plans to visit this week and hopefully visit the trap line soon.
Samantha, Sterling Teed:
This group will begin interviews out at Saik’uz and will interview their Grandma. Samantha and Sterling are cousins. They are related to Mary John.
Shaylene and Candice: MADELINE JOHNNY Saik’uz
This group will interview Shaylene’s grandma Madeline from Saik’uz. Madeline is excited about it and they took out a camera today for filming and seem to have some really great ideas. They also mentioned filming the photos at the Potlach house.

Interview questions about Life Events:
Immigration:
When did the first family member come to Canada? Where did they come from? How did they get here? Are any family members still abroad?
Work:
How did you earn a living when you were young? What was your first job?
Daily Life:
How did you travel from place to place? Did your family have a car? What were your favorite pastimes? How did your children behave?
Interview questions about Objects:
Photos:
Go beyond the edges of the photo when looking at family pictures:
Where was the picture taken? Who took the picture, for they are not in the photograph but must have been in the place? Why were the people in the photo gathered? How are they related? Why were they together at this moment? What were they doing?

Senior Stories
You have been working hard--interviewing seniors at Riverside place.
You have learned about interview questions, met with your partners at least 3 times and have begun developing stories. Please remember: THESE ARE NOT YOUR STORIES! The stories are your new friends from Riverside Place.
You were introduced to note taking and jotted notes from the immigration story I read. Most of you did a great job, you interviewed one another and started a new project.
We are visiting Riverside Place every WED and THURS.

We will watch films tomorrow and critique each others work. Please tell me the clip you have selected so that I can pass it back to you for the end of your film--then we can compare your reaction to the original section of the film.
Editing:
We now have VIDEO Pad which is a simple editing software that is FREE and includes an audio program. The VIDEO pad is placed on all computers (please check yours and let me know which computers do not have them.

Tuesday Morning
Good morning, yesterday we watched PROM NIGHT IN MISSISSIPPI. We had a small discussion about how the movie may relate to our own town and what we think about racism in 2010. I think we were all amazed at some of the interviews and how the students felt about each other.
You completed a handout and were given time to think about an experience of your own and how you might have felt/feel.
Today, I will be working with each group to make sure you are all on board, understand the assignment and have everything organized. Criteria for this assignment:
Shot list
Provide a THOROUGH shot list of the found footage. Full marks go to groups who plan out EVERY shot.
Appropriateness
The film choice is an appropriate scene and to help with that think 'if I have to ask if this is appropriate, it probably isn't'
Storyboard
The storyboard is complete with any scene change, movement etc. Failure to provide a detailed storyboard will result in a loss of marks
Filming
The filming is smooth and follows the guidance of the chosen film
Edit
All the footage is carefully edited to ensure a smooth final product.
Music
Music can be added to create an effect that may even be different than the original movie.
Social Responsibility
You have attended ALL classes and have worked with the group to create the outline, storyboard etc, you have not skipped and or been late.
I will come around to each group, mark on social responsibility today and release you to your planning and or filming.

Good Morning!
Good day, we will be going over video camera use, how to handle and expectations. NO ONE will be on the computers when we begin class. Please meet around the tables for brief discussion and then you may move to computers. We have a short time left before we will be visiting the Riverside place and at that time, you will meet the person you will be working with.
Criteria for this class:
1) Be on time! More than three unexcused lates will result in a blue slip.
2) Do not skip! Your mark depends on it, your team members depend on it, if caught two times you will get a blue slip and a call home.
3) Be on task. NO GAMES! I have noticed how there is a major lack of focus. We will seriously study film and write reviews if you cannot work together to create films. I have no problem with that!!
Silent reaction films will be due at the first week in October: this is next week.
Please ask yourself:
Do I need support?
Do I still need an idea?
Have I gathered all of the materials I may need?
Do I need to find a group to work with?

Today we will discuss the silent film, I will check on the groups to see how you are progressing. Remember attendance is VITAL to you getting a good mark or not in this class. We will have our first film journal where you will have a few minutes to come up with ideas. You can start by thinking about the last movie you watched and mix it with your favorite all time movie. How would it come together? What characters would you choose?
When finished, students can complete paper work and begin to scout location. Filming can begin tomorrow.

Silent Reaction
Silent Reaction
Choose a commercial TV or excerpt from a TV show or movie and make a “copy cat” version with the same intent and message as the original only you will act the film out SILENTLY. Everything will depend on your actions. Simply choose a certain scene from a movie and act it out again silently. The charades of the scene will definitely make it far funnier than the original. You can add music (royalty free) to make the actions more interesting.
PROCEDURE
recreate the original scene

Montage-
Montage is a technique in film editing in which a series of short shots are edited into a sequence to condense space, time, and information. It is usually used to suggest the passage of time, rather than to create symbolic meaning.
From the 1930s to the 1950s, montage sequences often combined numerous short shots with special optical effects (fades, dissolves, split screens, double and triple exposures) and music. They were usually assembled by someone other than the director or the editor of the movie.
