Thursday!

Good day. I will not be here today but will be back tomorrow!! Please organize any area you need to and arrange to film wither today or tomorrow. It is very important to stay focused and on task so that you will be ready for our new project next week:)

Good day, today you will have the block to film/organize your ideas. Some of you have started filming. Please remember these are due next week! Yesterday, we looked over the social responsibility rubric and talked about your involvement in group work. All films are graded on collaboration and process and finished product. Please be sure to be on time, work as a team and EDIT< EDIT, EDIT.
We will be watching some shorts from a Vancouver Film School (Summer Program) in Vancouver.

Tuesday Morning

Good morning, yesterday we watched PROM NIGHT IN MISSISSIPPI. We had a small discussion about how the movie may relate to our own town and what we think about racism in 2010. I think we were all amazed at some of the interviews and how the students felt about each other.
You completed a handout and were given time to think about an experience of your own and how you might have felt/feel.

Today, I will be working with each group to make sure you are all on board, understand the assignment and have everything organized. Criteria for this assignment:

Shot list
Provide a THOROUGH shot list of the found footage. Full marks go to groups who plan out EVERY shot.
Appropriateness
The film choice is an appropriate scene and to help with that think 'if I have to ask if this is appropriate, it probably isn't'
Storyboard
The storyboard is complete with any scene change, movement etc. Failure to provide a detailed storyboard will result in a loss of marks
Filming
The filming is smooth and follows the guidance of the chosen film
Edit
All the footage is carefully edited to ensure a smooth final product.
Music
Music can be added to create an effect that may even be different than the original movie.
Social Responsibility
You have attended ALL classes and have worked with the group to create the outline, storyboard etc, you have not skipped and or been late.

I will come around to each group, mark on social responsibility today and release you to your planning and or filming.

Good Morning!

Good day, we will be going over video camera use, how to handle and expectations. NO ONE will be on the computers when we begin class. Please meet around the tables for brief discussion and then you may move to computers. We have a short time left before we will be visiting the Riverside place and at that time, you will meet the person you will be working with.
Criteria for this class:
1) Be on time! More than three unexcused lates will result in a blue slip.
2) Do not skip! Your mark depends on it, your team members depend on it, if caught two times you will get a blue slip and a call home.
3) Be on task. NO GAMES! I have noticed how there is a major lack of focus. We will seriously study film and write reviews if you cannot work together to create films. I have no problem with that!!


Silent reaction films will be due at the first week in October: this is next week.
Please ask yourself:
Do I need support?
Do I still need an idea?
Have I gathered all of the materials I may need?
Do I need to find a group to work with?

Thursday September 23

Good afternoon, today I will meet with each group and discuss the progress on your videos. We will watch the last montage and make appropriate comments to the group.  You are expected to have this next video 'silent reaction' completed by the first week in October as we will be beginning the 'Senior Stories' unit.

How to be successful:
-Show up to class on time.
-Meet with group members daily.
-Choose group members wisely:look around, who is always on time and present?
-Storyboard and plan your ideas.
-Spend ample time organizing and creating a shot list.
-Spend TIME working on the edited portion of the video.

Today we will discuss the silent film, I will check on the groups to see how you are progressing. Remember attendance is VITAL to you getting a good mark or not in this class. We will have our first film journal where you will have a few minutes to come up with ideas. You can start by thinking about the last movie you watched and mix it with your favorite all time movie. How would it come together? What characters would you choose?
When finished, students can complete paper work and begin to scout location. Filming can begin tomorrow.

Silent Reaction

Silent Reaction

Choose a commercial TV or excerpt from a TV show or movie and make a “copy cat” version with the same intent and message as the original only you will act the film out SILENTLY.  Everything will depend on your actions.  Simply choose a certain scene from a movie and act it out again silently. The charades of the scene will definitely make it far funnier than the original. You can add music (royalty free) to make the actions more interesting.

PROCEDURE

      Capture the original on tape or watch on YouTube

      Brainstorm with your group possible ways to

      recreate the original scene

      Assign roles to members of your group

      Design a script which lays out the different shots in your production, step by step

      Create a storyboard which includes sketches of clips, types of effects angles and dialogue   notes as necessary

      Create as close to the original version as possible in your team

      In the final product, the original will be followed by your version

      The clip should not exceed 2 minute  (4 minutes in total)

You will begin by selecting a SHORT clip from a movie. Assign roles and study the scene. Keep track of all movements as you will be acting this out as the ONLY means of communication. You will have to deliver the message without sound. You can later score the film with sound (all original)

Today we will continue editing. I will go over how to import from the HDD camera to the computer. We will be using Windows Movie Maker for the Montage assignment with the  scavenger hunt video clips. Today, I will go over voice overs and do a demo on the BLUE SNOBALL.

Video Scavenger Hunt

In your production groups (once your LOGO and Production names have been decided and approved) you will be working together to collect images and film the required objects/situations. You will need to learn how to get into the shot and think about how you may capture the shot using a variety of perspectives. You will need to pause between clips and come back to the school to edit.

Vocabulary:


Montage- 

Montage is a technique in film editing in which a series of short shots are edited into a sequence to condense space, time, and information. It is usually used to suggest the passage of time, rather than to create symbolic meaning.

From the 1930s to the 1950s, montage sequences often combined numerous short shots with special optical effects (fades, dissolves, split screens, double and triple exposures) and music. They were usually assembled by someone other than the director or the editor of the movie.

What makes a good shot?
We will follow along with a online tutorial that explains and provides excellent examples of the shots that make good and exciting film.

Friday- Double Block


Today, you will finish up any work on the film roles essay/powerpoint and we will start presenting in the second half of the double.
We will also begin to select students to become part of your team. You will need to create a production name and create a logo design for the production name. You will later create a title card (title animation) for at the beginning of your films.
We will also create a 'NVSS MEDIA ARTS presents' title animation.

Remember * All production names MUST be appropriate.

First Full Day

Good afternoon,

Today we will look at and discuss a film survey. You will answer questions so that I can get a good idea about your interests, abilities and experience with Video/Film

You will get an assignment on film roles and will have this week and next to create a presentation on a a film role of your choice. MAX. group size is 3 people.
